Carol Settle Bowersett July 30, 1929 to November 24, 2020
Carol Settle Bowersett, 91, of Silver Spring, MD passed away peacefully on November 24, 2020. She was at the North Carolina home of her daughter Cathy Streahle who along with another daughter, Cindy Corbett, were caring for their mother. Carol was born on July 30, 1929 in Luray, VA to James and Julia Settle. She was the youngest of four children and the first in her family to be born in a hospital. The siblings grew up in Flint Hill, VA.
In 1947, Carol graduated from Warren County H. S. in Front Royal, VA. She attended William and Mary and graduated from the Univ. of Maryland in 1951 with a degree in education. Her senior year of college Carol married Roswell S. Bowersett, Sr., also of Flint Hill. They were married at Carol’s family home. After graduation they moved to Athens, GA where Ros attended vet school at the Univ. of Georgia and Carol taught kindergarten.
Carol was described as a real southern lady. She was kind and had a servants heart. Carol served as a Girl Scout Leader, worked with Meals on Wheels, taught Bible School and worked on several committees at her Church. However her favorite job was as wife and mother to her four children. She was always happiest when the whole family could gather together.
Carol was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Ros, who owned and operated Four Corners Animal Hospital, along with their son Ros. Her brother James Settle of St. Mary’s City, MD and a sister Evelyn Petersen (Dolly) of Potomac Falls, VA also predeceased her. Carol is survived by her sister Mary Bowersett, 96, of Virginia Beach, VA who was married to Charles, brother to Ros.
Also surviving are her children Carolyn Bowersett Dillard (Eddie), Cathy Bowersett Streahle (Bob), Ros Bowersett, Jr. (Cathy Diamond) and Cindy Bowersett Corbett (Mike) and Duyen Nguyen her “adopted” AFS daughter. Carol is survived by 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
A memorial service and celebration of life will take place next year.
Carol had a special note on her refrigerator for many years that she always shared with others, “Don’t Postpone Joy!”
