CUSTOM TOYOTA HALF-TRACK
MATTHEW KETT TORONTO, ON, CANADA
Toyota actually built a prototype halftrack, and Matt’s ultra-realistic Scx10based build re-creates it amazingly well. It took him eight months to piece together; he salvaged Axial front and rear axles, transmission, and chassis rails, and spliced them with a Heng Long Walker Bulldog 1/16 RC tank. He tells us the biggest challenge was retaining the functionality of the tank tracks with the new driveline, but with a few fabricated parts and some careful engineering of existing ones, he made it work. A GCM motor relocation kit helped, along with a custom transfer case, MIP driveshafts with beef tubes in the front axle, and parts from Locked Up RC to add heft. He inserted a proper differential out back in place of the locker and brazed the sprocket drives onto the driveshafts. The rig is powered by a Tekin 35T brushed motor and FXR speed control. Matt did a fair bit of work to the RC4WD Cruiser cab to get it to look right, but we think the end result was worth it!
