Continental love story

- BY NADINE ROGG • GOSHEN, CT

My brother came home one day in 1952 with his friend Herm riding on the back of his motorcycle. Herm looked like a nice guy, and he called me the following day for a date. Herm didn’t really have much time for dating. He was in his 20s, like me, and he worked six days a week, while also attending college four nights a week.

But he showed up for the date driving a beautiful shiny black 1940 Lincoln Continental with the top down. In his hand was a yellow rose. Wow, I was so impressed! We drove to High Point Park in New Jersey, where he took a photo of me sitting on the fender of the car.

The Lincoln continued to be an important part of our lives: The year after we met, Herm and I went for another ride, to another park, where he proposed with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring. We were married the next year and drove the car on our honeymoon to New York’s Lake George and Niagara Falls.

Our family grew and, with our two children, we toured many states with the Classic Car Club of America. Our children love the memories of those family trips.

On our 25th and 50th anniversaries, Herm and I celebrated by touring New England in the Lincoln. For our 60th anniversary, we had a big celebration at the local country club. The Lincoln was decorated with white balloons, and Herm parked it in front of the club. Our local newspaper featured us as Sweethearts of the Week.

After many wonderful years of marriage, we are in pretty good health. And so is the Lincoln, well housed in our garage. Over six decades, the car has been wonderful, but

• Herm has been even better.
