SALLY REVAMPS CORNISH HOLIDAYS

In rainy U.K., glamping is the way to go.

- BY MARK HUTCHINSON • LONDON, ENGLAND

When my children were young I decided to take them camping in Cornwall, so I bought a tent and the many items needed to camp in rainy England. It was a bit of a nightmare holiday, and after that I vowed I’d never sleep in a tent again: If I ever went back, it was going to be in an Airstream or a van.

I’ve always loved cars, specifically vintage, so the only option was something unique and old. I looked online and in magazines for the perfect fit and found this little gem with an original converted Devon camper interior. We called it Sally.

I purchased our Sally in 2005 in Birmingham with its original engine. Unfortunately it broke down on the way back to London. After getting it—on a trailer—to a specialist garage in the city, we decided to replace the engine with a 2-liter flat-four for more power. The previous owner had already upgraded the suspension and braking system to disc brakes on the front, while leaving the original drum brakes on the rear.

In 2016 Sally underwent a baremetal restoration to get rid of all of the normal rust issues and prepare for a fresh paint job. It also got allnew electrics, a replacement roof, and power steering, which vastly improved the driving experience.

The vehicle is now in brilliant condition, but my children are grown so I’m hoping to sell it. We spent many great years camping in Sally and a vintage 1952 Airstream, which
