Sticky Situation

- GLENDA FERGUSON PAOLI, IN

ON HIS DRIVES around Chamois, Missouri’s county roads in the ’50s, my dad, Huel White, never planned to stop and visit anyone. The main attraction was the scenery and “to burn some cheap gas.” Every car he owned got great gas mileage, but they always needed oil, so he brought along a container of oil, just in case.

The county roads were mainly dirt, gravel and blacktop. One time in the summer, he drove on a new road, ignoring the signs that said to stay off. We got stuck in the blacktop, and a farmer had to pull us out with his tractor. It was back to dirt roads after that.
