List of recent deadly avalanches in US

One person was killed and another injured in an avalanche at Palisades Tahoe on Wednesday morning, according to the Placer County Sheriff 's Office.

The fatality is believed to be the first caused by an avalanche in the U.S. during the winter of 2023-24.

A total of 30 people were killed by avalanches in the U.S. during the 2022-23 season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Informatio­n Center.

● Three climbers died in an avalanche on Colchuck Peak in Washington state on Feb. 19, 2023, when the lead climber in a six-person group triggered a slab avalanche that carried four members of the group approximat­ely 1,000 vertical feet. A helicopter rescue team was able to recover one of the deceased; the two other victims' bodies weren't recovered until May and June.

● A backcountr­y snowboarde­r was killed in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area in Southern Nevada on Jan. 9, 2023, when he was swept into trees.

● A ski mountainee­r was killed following an avalanche on Hurd Peak southwest of Bishop, California, on June 14, 2023; he died of injuries sustained in the slide.

The most recent avalanche death at a Lake Tahoearea ski resort was on January 17, 2020, when a skier died at Alpine Meadows in the area between Scott Chute and Promised Land.

One of the deadliest avalanches in U.S. history occurred on March 31, 1982, when seven died in an avalanche at Alpine Meadows.

A series of late-March storms dropped nearly 7 feet of snow in a four-day stretch, piling on top of a base snowpack already measuring more than 7 feet.

A mid-afternoon avalanche brought millions of tons of snow down a 700-foot drop, destroying heavy equipment and a two-story ski lift workers' building.
