A Nevada man was arrested Wednesday and is facing charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., according to the Justice Department.

Mario Gonzalez, 51, of Las Vegas, is facing felony charges including obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office.

Gonzalez also faces several misdemeanor charges, including disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and knowingly entering a restricted building.

Documents show that Gonzalez traveled from Las Vegas to Washington, D.C., and joined a group of rioters at the Peace Monument circle on Jan. 6, 2021, according to the documents.

Court documents also state that Gonzalez carried a fire extinguisher while entering the northern scaffolding around the inauguration stage and sprayed it at the direction of the police line.

Police responded with a chemical riot control agent in the direction of Gonzalez, who retreated after the response by law enforcement, according to court documents.

Gonzalez was arrested on Jan. 8 by the FBI in Las

Vegas. At that time, Gonzalez made his initial court appearance.

Gonzalez is the sixth person from Nevada to face charges in connection with the Capitol insurrection. Five of those individuals were from Las Vegas, and one man from Winnemucca was sentenced to six years in prison in the spring of 2023.

Since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,265 individuals from all 50 states have been charged for crimes related to the Capitol insurrection. Over 440 of these individuals were charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, which is a felony.
