RENO - Whitney “Whit” Baker Hackstaff, left an indelible mark on the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Born on May 5th, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, Whit’s journey through life was marked by a deep commitment to his family, his profession, and his passions.

Whit spent his early years in New England and northern Idaho before settling in Reno in 1954 at the age of 15. He attended Reno High School, served honorably in the US Army Reserves, and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1962 with a degree in chemistry – zoology. His dedication to education continued as he attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the University of the Pacific, earning his DDS degree and began a lifelong career in general dentistry in 1966. He went on to be licensed to practice dentistry in Nevada, California, and Rhode Island. Throughout his career, Whit distinguis­hed himself as a dedicated profession­al, earning a fellowship in the Academy of Dentistry. He served as the President of the Nevada Dental Society, leaving an impact on the dental community. Whit’s commitment extended beyond dentistry, as he assumed leadership roles in various organizati­ons, such as the SAE Fraternity, Sierra Nevada Regional Porsche Club of Nevada, and the Truckee Meadows Toastmaste­rs Club. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society. As well as a life member of the American Dental Associatio­n.

A true adventurer at heart, Whit’s passion for flying took him to remote places in his Cessna 182 Turbo plane, providing dental care to patients in Tonapah, NV as well as a trip across the country to his family home on Block Island, Rhode Island. His love for skiing, camping, gardening, hiking, and painting reflected his zest for life. Whit ran 6 marathons throughout his years, showcasing his determinat­ion. 3 of which were alongside his wife, Donna, for the Arthritis Foundation. Whit was not only a man of accomplish­ments but also a beloved family man. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Donna Hackstaff, for an incredible 63 years. Their union brought forth a daughter, Diane Hackstaff Dow, and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Dow. Whit took great pride in his role as a grandfathe­r to Whitney Dix and Lindsey Franey. His extended family includes several nieces and nephews and his sister, Lynn Hackstaff, PhD. A man of faith, Whit devoted his life to the Lord Jesus Christ as a Spirit-filled Christian. His proud conservati­ve values and love for books were evident to all who knew him. Whit’s sense of humor, love for fun, and tendency for telling jokes created an atmosphere of joy around him.

Whitney Hackstaff passed away on February 17th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service. Preceded in death by his parents, Anne Whitney and Donald F. Hackstaff, his brother Don Hackstaff, and sister Tacey Newtson. Whit is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter Diane, his son-in-law Jeff, his granddaugh­ters Whitney and Lindsey as well as his great-granddaugh­ters Amelia and Sophia.

His ashes will be scattered on Block Island, Rhode Island where he spent his summers during his retirement years. Whit’s departure leaves a void, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to call him family and friend. May he rest in eternal peace in the arms of his beloved Jesus.
