RENO - George Hernandez, 70, of Reno, passed away on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024. George was born in Truckee, California on June 11th, 1953 to Jose Hernandez Estrada and Maria Hernandez Estrada.

George grew up in Montello, Nevada and graduated from Wells High School in 1971. George walked on to the University of Nevada Track & Field team where he became one of the most successful runners of his generation. George’s passion for running developed him into an accomplish­ed marathon runner whose career highlights include setting the all-time record for the Silver State Marathon in 1980 (2:27:26) and running in the 1984 Olympic Trials.

One of his proudest moments was having the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch in 1984.

George’s profession­al career included several years as a banker where he valued the opportunit­y to help others achieve their financial goals, particular­ly the Latino community. He was also a manager in several industries, leading by example with his unmatched work ethic and dedication to treating everyone with respect.

George enjoyed listening to and talking about music, especially the Beatles. He was a devoted Raiders fan. He loved telling stories about being a kid in the small town of Montello, his running days, and his favorite memories of his children, family, and friends.

George was a deeply proud father, a loving brother, and a loyal friend to many in the Reno community. He was known for his generous heart and kind soul. He will be greatly missed.

George was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his sons, Lucas Hernandez (Cara) and Daniel Hernandez (Kim); granddaugh­ter, Colette Loftis-Hernandez; sister, Martha Hernandez; and brothers, Gilbert Hernandez (Debbie), Raul Hernandez, and Robert Hernandez (Angie).

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held on Friday, April 5th from 1pm - 3pm PT at the Whispering Vine located at 4201 West 4th Street in Reno. In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation to The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows in George’s name.
