Two men were sentenced to 46 years prison each for shooting and paralyzing a woman in 2021 at an apartment on Wedekind Road, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

Juan Sanchez-Ramirez, 35, and Juan Lopez-Leyva, 32, will be eligible for parole after 16 and 17 years, respectively.

In January 2021, Lopez-Leyva and Sanchez-Ramirez went to the victim’s home to retrieve a wallet and cell phone that had been left there during a fight the previous day. They told the victim they would “shoot her up” if she didn’t open the door, according to the DA’s office.

The 34-year-old woman let the men in after they agreed not to harm her, but when she opened the door, they grabbed her and held guns to her head. As she tried to flee, Lopez-Leyva shot her in the leg, upper shoulder and neck.

The victim was left a quadriplegic and now lives in a medical care facility, the DA’s office said.

Both men had multiple prior convictions.

Sanchez-Ramirez served four years after a 2013 conviction for battery with a deadly weapon. In 2019, he was convicted of attempted possession of a firearm by a felon and sentenced to prison.

After violating his parole in the 2019 case and being sent back to prison, he was released in November 2020, just two months before the Wedekind Road shooting.

Sanchez-Ramirez also was convicted of nearly two dozen misdemeanor crimes in the past, according to the DA’s office.

Lopez-Leyva also had two prior felony convictions, including robbery in 2010 and burglary in 2012. He was sentenced to prison in both cases and also violated his parole each time. LopezLeyva also had more than three dozen misdemeanor and two gross misdemeanor convictions, the DA’s office said.

Both men were sentenced on April 25.
