Barr proves to be an active resident of Fox Township
FOX TOWNSHIP Every community has that one person who is involved in everything and seeks to help. For the outdoor, and shooting community that person is Craig Barr.
There are very few programs Barr is not engaged in or volunteering to help.
“I was brought up to help others before myself. I try to do that for everyone, but mostly I do it for the kids,” Barr said.
The first program that Barr was involved with was raising pheasants through the Fox Township Sportsman's Club. He was one of the men that helped to create the program back in 2004.
Barr also helps with Pheasants Forever, whose mission is to conserve pheasants, quail and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education and conservation advocacy. He has a corn field that he tends for the program.
Barr was a coach and a member of the board of directors for the Fox Township High School Trap League, but retired from both of those jobs last year. However, if there is an event that the league needs help with, he is still willing to lend a helping hand.
He is also one of the founders and coaches for the Fox Township Summer Trap Program. He continues to help out student shooters and mothers learning to shoot. Barr is a National Rifle Association shotgun instructor, which allows for him to give the shooters a crash course in handling different firearms.
The instructor certification also allows for him to be available as a shotgun instructor for the Bucktail Council. He teaches proper handling for certifications.
Barr is also an instructor for the huntertrapper education that happens during the year.
Outside of the shooting and hunting programs, Barr also has a pond which kids can fish in and has occasionally helped with the fish rodeo held each year for people with disabilities. He also conducts a program in schools in which he helps students make various arts and crafts out of recycled materials, such as a recent project making plastic tea bottles into piggy banks.
“I like to help the kids, but I also want them to have fun. That's why I joke around with them so that they smile,” Barr said.
