VA to recognize veterans during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week

ALTOONA— The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center will recognize and honor Veteran Patients during National Salute to Veteran Patients week, which occurs from February 12 – 18.

Since 1978, VA has used the week of Valentine's Day to provide a weeklong commemorat­ion for Veterans, while also encouragin­g more in the community to Volunteer in VA.

To continue this tradition of recognitio­n, on Valentine's Day, February

14, Veterans cared for at the Altoona facility's Community Living Centers (CLC) will receive special recognitio­n for their service to the nation.

James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center Director, Dr. Derek Coughenour, will present each CLC Veteran patient with a certificat­e and pin correspond­ing to their Armed Forces Service Branch. Dr. Coughenour will also deliver a brief speech to Veterans and Medical Center

Volunteers – recognizin­g both of them for their service and dedication.

“Valentines Day is a day when many show and share their endearment for loved ones – we're using this day to express our adoration for our Nation's Heroes,” said Dr. Coughenour. “This is also a time to show appreciati­on for the Volunteers who provide comfort and companions­hip to our Veterans – they give their time and talents for the most noble of causes: serving those who served our nation.”

This year, the Medical Center received more than 300 Valentines for Veterans, including CLC residents.
