Student winner announced for March 4-8

In the closest race yet, Freeport's Rachel Salazar edged out Hononegah's Sofia Korasick by just 41 votes for this week's Rockford Register Star Student of the Week.

Nearly 3,800 votes were cast, with Salazar receiving 41.25% of the vote to Korasick's 40.16%.

Salazar, a senior, is a three-sport athlete who carries a 4.0 GPA ranking in the top 10 in her class. A teacher who has had Salazar in classes for three years called her a model of consistenc­y and said, “She is what we look for in all students.”

Other finalists include Boylan's Nolan Coen, Guilford's Damien Johnson and Auburn's Philippe Ndikumana.

Readers can vote for who they think deserves the title of Student of the Week in our online poll. You can vote as many times as you want until noon Thursday.

Winners are announced online Friday and in print on Sundays.
