REPEAT OFFENDERS
DON’T SNUB Palm Springs as a Groundhog Day copycat before you see the comic curveballs thrown by a cast of crazies, led by director Max Barbakow and screenwriter Andy Siara. Andy Samberg stars as Nyles, tagging along at a desert wedding as a date for the maid of honor (Meredith Hagner). There,
Nyles hits on Sarah (Cristin Milioti, so good), the drunk sister of the bride (Camila Mendes). And then we find out that Nyles is in a time loop that has already made him relive this wedding day to the point of suicide. How he draws Sarah into his prison — and how the film mixes in earthquakes, dinosaurs, and a psycho guest (bravo, J.K. Simmons) — is not to be spoiled. Palm Springs suggests that repetition can kill sex drives, marriages, and even the will to live. Yet it still leaves you laughing gratefully at the resilience of love.
