A Cartersville man is facing murder charges in the death of a fellow inmate at the Floyd County Jail.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Denver F. Allen, 30, of 15 Webb Drive, Cartersville, was charged Thursday with the murder of Stephen Rudolph Nalley — who was found dead in his cell at the jail early Wednesday morning.

Assistant County Coroner Gene Proctor said Nalley, 49, of Rome, was apparently beaten to death.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.

The warrant for Allen, taken out by GBI Special Agent Amanda Rowlen, does not provide any details regarding the nature of the attack on Nalley and officials are remaining somewhat tightlipped. District Attorney Leigh Patterson said she could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

Both Allen and Nalley were housed in the jail’s O-Block, typically used for inmates with mental health issues, according to Floyd County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Carrie Edge.

Bartow County sent Allen for boarding at the Floyd County Jail on Aug. 19. According the Bartow County jail roster, Allen had been booked into that facility on March 30 on four felony counts of making terroristic threats and acts.

The specific nature of the allegations against Allen in Bartow County

was not available late Thursday.

Nalley had been incarcerated since Aug. 12 on charges of burglary, aggravated stalking and a Superior Court order to serve seven months and 27 days in the Floyd County Jail.
