Escort to bring Sutton’s body tonight
The former police officer and deputy was killed in Afghanistan.
The remains of Barry Sutton, a former Floyd County police officer and sheriff’s deputy who was killed in Afghanistan, will be returned to Rome in an escort tonight, said Maj. Tom Ewing, patrol division commander for the Floyd County Police Department.
The plane carrying Sutton home is expected to arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta at around 9 p.m.
Sutton’s body will be escorted back on I-75 through Cartersville and into Rome on U.S. 411. The procession will follow Turner McCall Boulevard to Martha Berry Boulevard. The final destination will be Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, Martha Berry Highway.
The sheriff’s office is asking that supporters show respect to the family and not follow the convoy.
An account has been set up at Citizens First Bank to help the family. To make a contribution, inform the teller the donation is for the Barry Sutton fund.
The family will receive friends Monday at 4 p.m. at the Church at Northside, 75 North Floyd Park Road. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Church at Northside.
Sutton was killed Aug. 22 while training Afghani law enforcement officers as part of a NATO effort.
He had been a police trainer/mentor at DynCorp International Since April 2011.
