UCS overwhelms Cornerstone From staff reports

-

The Unity Christian Lions bounced back from their season-opening loss last week to roll to a win at Shorter University’s Ben Brady Field.

The Lions (1-1) shut down Cornerstone Academy 50-6.

Unity head coach Mark Ackerman said his team started the game strong and was able to maintain that momentum through all four quarters.

“Two weeks ago, we weren’t agressive,” said Ackerman. “That’s what we preached these past two weeks was to be more agressive. We wanted to be agressive in the first quarter and let the other three fall where they may and our kids did that. In our first game, our seniors didn’t play well, but tonight they did. Our six seniors played really well tonight.”

Luke Fuller and Cameron Atkinson teammed up to carry the Lions to the win. Fuller rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. He also caught one pass for a 45-yard touchdown.

Unity quarterback Cameron Atkins was 6-for-9 for 110 yards and a touchdown. He also had nine carries for 66 yards and another score. The Lions jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a 9-yard score from Fuller and an 8-yard touchdown run from Atkinson.

Fuller added a 43-yard scored in the second quarter and Collin Espy and Collin Mathis scored 3-yard and 10-yard runs respectively.

The Lions scored on the opening play of the second half to take a 44-6 lead on a 45-yard pass from Atkinson to Fuller.

The Lions’ final score came in the fourth quarter when Logan Pritchett scored from 2 yards out after the Lions’ defense recovered a bad snap.
