Jackets take down Mountaineers
Yellow Jacket fans drove home from the mountains in Murray County on Friday with smiles on their faces after Rockmart cruised to a 50-28 victory over North Murray.
Head coach Bin Turner cautions fans not to get too excited yet, because the Jackets still have plenty of work to do before next week’s home opener against Sonoraville.
“We have not arrived yet,” Turner said. “I don’t want anyone to think that. Come Monday, we’re going right back to work.”
Rockmart showed that off-season changes paid dividends on Friday, when in the opening drive the Jackets drove down the field to put 7 on the board via Michael Smith’s 3 yard run, and then followed that up with another Smith 8yard run on their second drive following a North Murray punt to go up 15-0 in the first quarter.
Smith scored again in the second quarter capitalizing off an interception on a 30-yard run before the Mountaineers finally responded with a touchdown before the half.
The Jackets were able to put 35 points on the board before the half, and added another three touchdowns after halftime, including a 45-yard run from Morgan Sims midway through the fourth quarter. Rockmart’s defense gave up two touchdowns late, but we’re able to hold the Mountaineers enough to keep them from catching up late as they did in last year’s 30-29 finish at The Rock.
Rockmart goes 1-0 heading into next week’s game against Sonoraville, the first home game of the season for the Jackets.
