Lady Indians find success in tourney

The Armuchee Lady Indians softball team went 3-1 in a tournament at Kennesaw Mountain High School, playing two games each on Friday and Saturday.

The team defeated Woodland, 1-0, Friday before losing to Columbus, 8-3, in its second game of the day.

Hannah Murray pitched the first inning, going all seven innings and posting a career-high 14 strikeouts. Erin Carney pitched all seven innings of the loss, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. Karson Fallin registered an RBI single in each game.

On Saturday, the Lady Indians swept both of their games, defeating Etowah, 5-4, and Hiram, 5-2.

Murray got another victory in the first game while also knocking a run in. Carney got a win in the final game of the weekend, going seven innings and allowing only three hits. In the two Saturday games, Peggy Copeland stood out, going 2for-5 and scoring a combined four runs.

The quality run through the tournament puts the Lady Indians at 9-4 for the season. They travel to Dade County on Thursday.

Unity Christian cross country competed at the Colonial Hills Cross Country Invitation­al on Saturday, and junior Charis Morgan led the team by finishing first in the girls’ division with a time of 22:02.

The Lady Lions also saw two more runners finish in the top 50.

The boy’s team saw its first team finish in two years, taking eighth place. Most notable was Ryan McKenna, taking 20th place with a time of 20:54, and Alexander Beaty finished 42nd with a time of 23:43.
