Berry College used a big third quarter to earn a win at Sewanee, 14-3, on Saturday.

The Vikings improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. The win — the Vikings’ third straight — was the first road win for the Berry football program. Sewanee dropped to 1-3 and 0-2.

The first half was a defensive struggle. The only points were scored on a Sewanee field goal. Callum Wishart nailed a 27-yarder in the second quarter. The score remained 3-0 at the half.

After a lackluster first half, the Vikings came to play in the second half. Jalen Tuggle scored on an 18-yard touchdown run.

Mitchell Blanchard’s PAT pushed the score to 7-3 with 12:41 remaining in the third period. Tuggle had 85 yards on 18 carries.

On Sewanee’s next offensive series, Kevin Grier intercepted a pass and ran it back 52 yards for a touchdown. Blanchard’s extra point gave Berry a 14-3 edge with 11:14 left in the third quarter.

“We started finishing plays in the second half,” said head coach Tony Kunczewski. “It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it. It feels good to be 3-1 and 2-0 in the conference.”

The Berry defense lost its shutout streak, but no opponent has scored a touchdown on Berry in ten quarters.

“Our defensive staff has been doing a great job preparing the guys,” Kunczewski said. “They are working hard and preparing well.”

Tyler Bertolini led Berry with 11 tackles, including five solo stops. The Vikings recorded four tackles for losses covering 29 yards in the

contest. Bertolini and Preston Stewart both were credited with 1.5 sacks.

Berry quarterback Dale Jackson was 7-of-17 passing for 107 yards. Chris Lilly had 70 receiving yards on four catches.

For Sewanee, Cody Daniel was 11-of-19 passing for 101 yards. He was sacked four times.

The Vikings host Washington (Mo.) University on Saturday as part of Berry College’s Mountain Day Weekend.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Valhalla.
