robber who fired at pickup

Police were searching Thursday for a man who fired a gun at an occupied pickup truck in the parking lot of a motel on Martha Berry Highway. According to Rome police reports: The driver of the Ford truck told police he and a friend were flagged down Wednesday night by two men wanting a ride to the Cottis Inn, 1105 Martha Berry Highway.

After taking them to the motel, the driver said one pulled out a revolver and demanded money. The driver began to drive forward and the man fired several shots at the car, shattering the back window. The second man who asked for a ride was still the vehicle.

The driver said he drove off south on Martha Berry, then pulled into the lot of Walgreens. The rider, who had been trying to force him to keep driving, ran off. He was later found by police a few buildings away.

However, the rider told a different story to police. He said he was not with the gunman. He said he knew the friend of the driver and the three met at the Cottis Inn. He also denied threatening the driver, saying he was let out peaceably at Walgreens.

No one claimed to know the man who had fired the shots and police have requested a copy of the surveillance video from the motel.
