Jennings to lead Shorter alumni Board
The Shorter University Alumni Governing Board has elected new officers for the 20162018 term. At the helm of the board is Ryan Jennings, of Canton, who will serve as president. Also serving on the leadership team are Darrell Black, of Milledgeville, vice president; Mary Shotwell Smith, of Rome, secretary; and Deric Shaw, of Kennesaw, treasurer.
Members of the Alumni Governing Board give their time through service and financial support to the university. They help in leading the Alumni Association, participating in the planning of campus events and encouraging contributions to Shorter University.
“I believe one of the most important parts of going to college is giving back when you are done,” said Jennings, who has served as a member of Shorter’s Alumni Governing Board since his graduation in May 2014. “I did not want my connections with Shorter to stop at my graduation, but I wanted that to be the start of a new chapter. I want to see a future student enjoy and grow to love Shorter just as much as I did. Shorter is my home, and I want to see it continue to prosper and succeed.”
Jennings graduated from Shorter in 2014 with bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in accountancy. The Canton native serves as an accountant in the corporate offices of Chick-filA, where he began work in July 2014. While at Shorter, he worked at the Rome YMCA for two years and volunteered as an AWANA worker.
Black, who graduated from Shorter in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree, owns and operates Flooring America of Milledgeville. He has served in a leadership role on the university’s Alumni Governing Board for almost 20 years, including service as chair of the board’s Athletics Committee. In his role as vice president, he will assist the president in special projects and serve as an ex-officio member of all committees except the nominations committee.
Smith, a registered nurse who holds a bachelor’s in nursing, earned master’s in arts degree from Shorter in 2010. She serves as the university’s director of student health services.
Shaw, who graduated from Shorter with a bachelor’s degree in science in 2004, works in the support services department at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Ryan Jennings
