Hawks win 2 vs. LeMoyne-Owen

Dustin Lawson collected five RBIs as the Shorter baseball team defeated LeMoyne- Owen College in a doublehead­er, 4-1 and 13-1.

In Game 1, the Magicians struck first when Robert Sheard grounded out to Patrick Sanderson, scoring Anthony Owen on the play. In the Shorter half of the fifth inning, Lawson grounded out but batted in Sanderson.

The Hawks scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Blaze Vazquez singled to left field, and Raul Cortez scored. Sean Avecedo reached on a Magician error, advancing to second base on the play. With runners on second and third, Lawson doubled, allowing the two runners to cross the plate, giving the Hawks a 4-1 advantage.

The bats came alive for Shorter in the second game.

Ty Cherry put the Hawks on the board with a two RBI double in the bottom of the first. Lawson immediatel­y followed Cherry with a single, scoring two more base runners and extending Shorter’s lead to 4-0.

Shorter will play two more games against the Magicians today beginning at noon.

Basketball: BSC women 60, Berry 49

Emma Cook had 12 points, but the Berry College women’s basketball team fell to Birmingham­Southern College 60- 49 on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 8- 14 overall and 2- 9 in the Southern Athletic Associatio­n.

The win improved the Panthers to 13- 6 and 110.

Cook’s 12 points led the Berry offensive effort. She was 5-of-16 from the field and sank two three-pointers.

Berry will travel to Jackson, Mississipp­i, for its next SAA matchup Sunday against Millsaps College at 2 p.m.

Lacrosse: Colorado

men 14, Berry 8

Christian Akers had four goals and Nick Voso added 16 saves, but the Berry College men’s lacrosse lost its season opener to Colorado College 14-8 on Friday at Valhalla.

The Vikings will host Methodist University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
