Strong start lifts Lady Devils to 7-AA finals

The Model girls’ basketball team will face Armuchee tonight for the region title.

After pulling off an upset Thursday to earn a berth in the state playoffs, the Rome girls lost to Creekview on Friday in the Region 7- AAAAA semifinals at Forsyth Central.

The Lady Wolves (18-8) fell to Creekview 63- 34 to be placed in the tournament’s consolatio­n finals.

Rome will play Kell today at 3 p. m. with the winner going into the state playoffs as the region’s No. 3 seed.

In other action Friday:

Pepperell girls 45, Callaway 42

The Pepperell girls’ basketball team earned a 45-42 win against

Callaway on Friday at CentralCar­roll, sending the Lady Dragons to the finals of the Region 5-AAA tournament.

The Lady Dragons will next face Haralson County tonight at 6 p.m. in the title game.

“We started out slow, but we continued to execute our gameplan and that worked out well,” said Pepperell head coach Judson Cox. “It was a game that was down to the wire.”

Pepperell was down for most of the game, trailing 9-2 at the end of the first, 25- 19 at halftime, and 32- 31 to start the fourth quarter.

“We got the shots we wanted but we couldn’t make them,” said Cox.

Madison Wilder scored 21 points to lead the Lady Dragons (15-10), and Leah Rowell scored 10 points. Freshmen Grace Hufford and Maycy Owens impressed Cox in the fourth quarter, as the two girls saw more playing time when Jesse Burkhalter fouled out early in the quarter.

The win was also big for the Lady Dragons having lost to Callaway in two previous meetings this season.

Rockmart boys 56,

Pepperell 53

The Pepperell boys’ basketball team was up by as many as nine points in Friday’s Region 5-AAA tournament semifinal game against Rockmart, but the Dragons missed some key shots late in the game as the Yellow Jackets came away with a 56- 53 win in overtime.

“We had a couple of breakdowns in overtime,” said Pepperell head coach Skip Matherly. “We missed a lot of makeable shots. We had the shots we wanted, we just didn’t knock them down.”

Pepperell will face Central-Carroll in today’s third-place game.

Tucker Wells and Austin Strickland each scored 19 points for the Dragons (14-9). Tae Hammond added 10 points.

Bronson Garner scored 20 points for the Jackets.

Rockmart will face Callaway tonight in the championsh­ip game at 7:30 p.m.

Haralson County girls 76,

Rockmart 44

Rockmart’s girls fell to Haralson County 76-44 in the Region 5-AAA tournament Friday at CentralCar­roll.

The Lady Rebels (24-1) were led by a trio of shooters on the night, headed up by Tori Causey with 20 points, followed by Alexis Boykin with 16 and Jada Ross with 14.

Rockmart’s Clara Delgado ended the night with 16, and Kalisha Printup with 12.

The Lady Jackets (11-16) will take on Callaway today at 3 p.m. in the region’s third-place game.

Haralson County will play Pepperell tonight at 6 p.m. for the championsh­ip.

Soccer: Rome boys 2,

Alexander 0

Johnny Reyes and Eduardo Zavala each scored one goal for the Rome High boys’ soccer team in a 2- 0 shutout against Alexander at Barron Stadium.

Edgar Blanco had one assist for the Wolves, who improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Wolves also got strong play from Carlitos Aceituno, Bo Crick, Conor Kelly and Sergio Vazquez. Daniel Quintanta earned the shutout in goal.

Rome will next face Cedartown on Wednesday at Barron Stadium.
