Shorter tops West Alabama

Three players scored in double figures for the Shorter men’s basketball team as the Hawks defeated the West Alabama Tigers 94-81 on Saturday.

Shorter’s Phil Taylor led all scorers with 31 points, Trevor McDade added 22 points, and Chris Daniels had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Shorter will play again Thursday at Delta State at 8:30 p.m.

Shorter women 75, West Alabama 61

The Shorter women’s basketball team defeated West Alabama 75-61 in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday. Taylor Adams led Shorter with 17 points, and Shakierya McClendon and Kayla Tillie scored 15 and 13 points, respective­ly.

Shorter will play again Thursday at Delta State at 6:30 p.m.

GHC men 68, Central Georgia 55

Led by freshman Kyvon Davenport’s 14 points and 10 rebounds the Georgia Highlands men’s basketball team rolled to a 68-55 win for their 25th straight win.

The Chargers came out in the second half and maintained their lead through out and pulled away. Justin Bridges had 13 points and Doniel Dean had 12 points. The Chargers improved to 25-1 and 130 in GCAA Conference play.

The Chargers will next travel to Chattahooc­hee Tech on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Basketball: GHC women 72,

Central Georgia 55

The Georgia Highlands women’s basketball team earned its 20th win of the season with a 72-55 victory against Central Georgia Tech.

Sophomore Kayla Carter and freshman Taylor Farley each had 11 points.

The Lady Chargers improved to 20- 9 on the season and 13- 2 in GCAA Conference play.

The Lady Chargers will next travel to Chattahooc­hee Tech on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Baseball: Shorter wins against LeMoyne-Owen

The Shorter baseball team improved to 5- 4 with two wins over LeMoyne-Owen, 8-1 and 11-1. The Hawks swept the four-game series against the Magicians.

In the first game, Jacob Farmer earned the win for Shorter. The sophomore struck out nine of the 12 batters he faced, giving up one hit over 3 1-3 innings.

In the second game, Michael Weiksner earned the win, pitching four innings.

Shorter will next play Tuesday on the road against Albany State at 1 p.m.

Berry sweeps Guilford

in doublehead­er

The Berry College baseball team swept Guilford College on Saturday, 5-2 and 6-2.

In Game 1, the Vikings rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ryan O’Connell pitched five innings, allowed two runs, four hits and earned his first victory of the year. Dusty Tyson went 3-for-3 with a double in the contest. Ben Jernigan and Hunter White both doubled.

In Game 2, T. J. Montgomery pitched four innings, and allowed six hits and one earned run. Slade Dale went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Devin Skelton was 2-of-3.

The Vikings will next play at Emory University on Tuesday.

Softball: Berry splits

against Maryville

The Berry College softball team split their season-opening doublehead­er against Maryville College on Saturday. Maryville took the first game 3-2, while Berry took the nightcap 8-0 in five innings.

Marie Collop led the Berry offense in the first game. Collop was 2- for- 3 at the plate with an RBI. Brittany Ferrell and Sarah Moore each added a hit in the loss as well.

Moore led the Berry offense in the second game, batting 3-for-3 at the plate. She scored two runs and added three RBIs in the win. Kassie Howard ( 1- 0) earned the win on the mound.

Howard allowed four hits and struck out eight in her five innings of work.

Berry (1-1) returns to Ford Field for its next doublehead­er Friday against Depauw at noon.

Lacrosse: Methodist

women 7, Berry 6

Angelica Miller’s free position shot with time expiring was saved by Emily Erwin as Methodist University held on to defeat Berry College, 7-6, in the season opener for both teams.

Kelsey McAnnally led the BC offense with three goals. Tori Alexander started for Berry in goal and made four saves. Ella Makin stopped two shots in the last 20:01 and took the loss.

Berry (0-1) will next face Hendrix on Saturday.
