Hawks win on Senior Day

The Shorter baseball team defeated Christian Brothers in two games Saturday, winning the opener 6-3, and the final game 8-1.

The Hawks honored their two seniors, Brian Cabrera and Sheldon Drake, prior to game one. “Those two guys were a huge help this season,” coach Wes Timmons stated. “Anytime you can bring guys back that have been there and can lead the younger guys it’s a huge help,” the coach added.

In game one, Blaze Vazquez got things started for Shorter when he evened the score at one run a piece with a solo home run to left field.

With the game tied at one, the visitors from Memphis, Tennessee took a 3-1 lead off a two-RBI double, but Shorter scored five unanswered runs to secure the victory. In the fifth, catcher Dustin Lawson’s two- RBI single scored Cabrera and Patrick Sanderson, tying the game at three.

The Hawks took their first lead of the contest the next inning when Sean Acevedo batted in Austin Miller. In the eighth inning, Sanderson gave Shorter a pair insurance runs when singled to left field, allowing Harrison Hatfield and Patrick Busscher to cross home plate.

The Hawks collected 11 hits in the 6-3 victory. Miller and Acevedo each had two leads to lead Shorter.

Busscher earned the victory in game one, giving up one hit and no earned runs in four innings of relief. The Bucs’ Will Rutledge earned the loss. Sanderson began Game 2 with a lead-off double and came around to score when Drake reached on an error by the Bucs second baseman.

After one inning, the Hawks led 1-0. They extended their lead to 70 by scoring six runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Shorter scored thanks to a two-RBI double by Vazquez and an RBI- triple by Cortes. Sanderson knocked in three runs in the fourth inning when he hit a shot over the fence in center field.

SU’s final run of the contest game off the bat of Acevedo in the bottom fifth inning. His RBI base hit allowed Cortes to score. The Hawks gave up one run to CBU in the sixth but were victorious, 8-1.

Michael Weiksner pitched 5 2-3 innings for the win.

Shorter hopes to close out the season with a sweep of Christian Brothers this afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Shorter.

Tennis: Sewanee women 5, Berry 0

The Berry College women’s tennis team lost to Sewanee, 5-0, in a Southern Athletic Associatio­n semifinal match on Saturday.

Berry’s season ends with a 10- 6 record.

Berry’s Mary Cerny was named to the SAA tournament team.
