A wreck on Ga. 140 left one man dead, one man injured and stalled traffic for nearly two hours Sunday evening.

According to Floyd County police Sgt. Shea Hovers, the driver of a silver Dodge Neon was declared dead on the scene, about a half a mile east of Ga. 53.

Hovers said the Neon was traveling west on 140 when it crossed the center lane and hit a Dodge Ram truck head-on at a high rate of speed.

He said the driver of the Neon was a Hispanic man, but police were unable to locate any identification at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a white man, was taken to Floyd Medical Center. Hovers said the man was alert and conscious at the scene, but first responders were unsure if he had any internal injuries. He also was unidentified late Sunday.

Witnesses who had been driving behind the Neon told police the car had been swerving on the road for a while. Hovers said reports indicate the Neon swerved into the truck without slowing down, and that the driver of the truck saw it coming but couldn’t get off the road fast enough.

Witnesses said that when the Neon hit the truck, the impact was hard enough to cause the back end of the Neon to fly up. The roof of the Neon smashed into the front end of the truck.

Hovers said there was no indication at the scene that alcohol or drugs had been involved, however he said it was possible the driver of the Neon was trying to eat and drive at the same time.

Ga. 140 was reopened around 7:30 p.m., about an hour and 45 minutes after the wreck.
