Hawks wrap up season with sweep

The Shorter baseball team closes out the season by winning their fourth straight game with a 9-4 win against Christian Brothers.

The Shorter baseball team closed out the season by winning their fourth straight game as they completed the sweep over Christian Brothers with a 9-4 victory.

The visiting Bucs briefly led as they got on the board first in the top of the second inning with an RBI-single, but the Hawks answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Mason Long’s sacrifice fly scored Raul Cortes before Harrison Hatfield followed with a two-RBI base hit up the middle, extending the home team’s lead to 3-1.

Patrick Sanderson collected two of his four RBIs in the bottom of the fourth. He helped push Shorter’s lead to 6-1 when he hit a twoRBI single to right-center field. Brian Cabrera, one of two seniors on the squad, knocked in Sanderson with a base hit as the Hawks led 7-1 after four innings of play.

Sanderson capped off his three for five day at the plate with a twoRBI home run in the bottom of the eighth and the Hawks won 9-4.

Sanderson and Hatfield each had three hits for Shorter.

Jacob Farmer earned the win, pitching 2 2-3 innings in relief of starter Micah Wyatt who went 3 13 innings. Farmer gave up no hits, while walking two and also striking out two. Shorter finishes the year with 17 wins and 32 losses and a 9-24 record against Gulf South Conference opponents.

Softball: West Florida 6, Shorter 4

The Shorter softball team saw their hopes of repeating at Gulf South Conference Champions come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling to West Florida 6-4 in Florence, Alabama. Shorter slipped to 30-20 on the season.

Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts through five innings of work.

Shorter will now await today’s NCAA DII Softball Selection Show to find out if they’ve earned a spot in the next weekend’s South Region Tournament as they ranked seventh in the region in the final regional poll of the year.
