Harry Brock has been appointed chairman of the Heart of the Community Foundation Board of Governors for 2016-2017.

The board and Redmond Regional Medical Center sponsor the annual Heart of the Community Awards program that recognizes local citizens for a lifetime of volunteer service to the community.

Recipients are honored at a black tie gala called “An Affair of the Heart” held in February, Heart Month. The 31st annual event is planned for Feb. 18, 2017, at The Forum.

Proceeds from the gala are earmarked for heart education, safety and humanitarian programs in Rome and Floyd County.

Previously funded projects have included the Heart House for families of critically ill patients on the Redmond campus, AED units in public facilities in Rome, a Par fitness course at Ridge Ferry Park, a serenity garden at Redmond and exercise equipment at the Thornton Recreation Center in Armuchee.

For the past two years grants have been given to local agencies to carry on their humanitarian projects.

Brock, a graduate of West Rome High School and the University of Alabama, is the owner of Appraisal Associates of Rome. This is Brock’s second time as chairman during his eight years on the board.

“The thing I like about the Heart of the Community is the unsung heroes that are recognized,” Brock said. “I’ve been on the selection committee before, where you sit down with the nominations from people, and it is just incredible the amount of work that people do in this community, people that you think you know and are aware of what they are involved in. It’s just amazing how much people are giving back to the community.”
