NEWNAN — A Jonesboro man is in jail after he tried to pull over an off-duty police officer.
Deion Laquon Colliers, 21, faces charges of impersonating a police officer and aggravated assault with a firearm after an unfortunate encounter on Interstate-85.
An off-duty East Point police officer was traveling to work on the interstate on Saturday night when a car, driven by Colliers, pulled up behind him and activated blue and red flashing lights on its dashboard, according to Lt. John Kennedy with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.
After the car passed him, the officer concluded it was not an actual law enforcement vehicle and called 911.
Colliers then realized he was being followed and allegedly pointed a handgun out the window at the off-duty officer’s car. At the bottom of the Exit 56 ramp, Colliers allegedly pulled over and approached the off-duty officer’s car with his gun drawn.
The officer then exited his car with his weapon drawn and ordered Colliers to lower his weapon and spread out on the ground.
Authorities with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office then arrived on scene, secured Colliers’ handgun — a loaded 9mm pistol — and took him into custody, according to Kennedy.
Colliers admitted to investigators he had activated his lights, but denied pointing his weapon out the window of the car. The handgun and strobe lights were taken by deputies.
