Man trying to avoid police jumps off bridge

ATLANTA — A man trying to escape police during a traffic stop jumped off a bridge and fell down several feet.

Multiple media outlets report police tried to pull the man over on Interstate 75, but he got out of his car and jumped over the retaining wall. He fell at least 70 feet.

Firefighters had to rescue him by using a basket and a lift. He was recovering Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital. The man’s name and the extent of his injuries was not immediately released.

Investigators tell WSBTV the man had been drinking and had run to avoid a DUI arrest. Following his release from the hospital, police say he will face that charge.
