Cedartown seeking DCA grant for more sewer line work
CEDARTOWN — Cedartown commissioners are looking for more money for sewer work in the coming years, as a project the city already got grant money for is about to begin and will take months to complete.
City Manager Bill Fann told commissioners recently that final preparations are underway to begin work by March on a sewer project in the residential area south of Goodyear Park. The project will replace sewer lines on Slusser Street, Laude Street and from Second Street to Fourth Street.
The work will cause portions of streets to be closed at times as lines are dug up underneath roadways.
First and second bids on the project came back well over expected estimates before commissioners finally approved the low bid of $1,249,180. Some $500,000 is coming from a Community Development Block Grant and the city’s stake in the project is nearly $750,000 overall.
Commissioners approved the low bid in January, awarding the contract to Site Engineering of Atlanta.
Now the city is looking for more grant money in hopes of finishing up all the sewer replacement work in the Goodyear Village.
Officials were given the green light by commissioners to apply for a 2017 grant covering sewer work, which will be awarded from the Department of Community Affairs.
The application seeks to continue work in the Goodyear Village area along Cedar Creek, to replace deteriorating sewer lines made of clay or iron that have needed repairs for several years.
The commission chose the sewer line work over the Lankford Events Center construction project since it was the cheaper of the two projects.
