CEDARTOWN — A hearing to determine the fate of a temporary protection order filed against former Polk School District Superintendent Darrell Wetherington was pushed back to May this past week.

Wetherington and his estranged wife Jennifer Wetherington both showed up for the Tuesday court appearance, but the attorney who is representing the former superintendent in the case didn’t make it to the hearing.

Tallapoosa Circuit Superior Court Judge Michael Murphy ordered the hearing over the order was being moved up to May 9.

He also ordered the temporary protection order remain in place until the upcoming hearing date. The TPO still in effect alleges Wetherington was engaged in stalking activities leading up to the Westside incident.

Wetherington resigned earlier this month following the start of a personnel investigation in January and his suspension from his position in February following an incident with his estranged wife at Westside Elementary School on Feb. 17 that was reported by the Cedartown Police. He was not charged with any crime during the incident.

High-speed chase results in one arrest and one still at large

FORT OGLETHORPE — A high-speed chase through Fort Oglethorpe over the weekend ended with one suspect being found in the woods, and another still on the run from police.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

The chase began just after 8 p.m. Sunday along Battlefield Parkway when Lt. Keith Sewell saw a silver Mercedes C240 dart across two lanes of traffic and make an illegal turn into the Lowe’s parking lot.

The vehicle circled through the lot and then turned back onto Battlefield Parkway initiating a chase, reports show. Sewell says the vehicle was traveling 100 mph in a 45-mph zone, nearly hitting multiple other vehicles and striking a median, causing a blowout of three of the car’s four tires.

After failing to make a curve on U.S. 27 bypass ramp, the two men left the vehicle on foot toward a wooded area. Officers eventually caught up to Chad Lee Burnette, 33, of Daisy Dallas Road in Hixson, Tenn., who admitted he’d been the driver in the vehicle and did not have a valid license.

While Burnette was taken into custody, his passenger, 28-year-old Robert John Komosinski, was able to elude officers. Warrants have been taken out for Komosinski as a result of the incident.

Burnette, 33, was arrested on charges of speeding, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude, obstruction of law enforcement officers, improper right turn, driving while license revoked and probation violation.

He remains in Catoosa County jail with bond set at $6,500.
