Darlington, Cedartown earn track success at meet

Plenty of local track and field athletes finished with top scores as five teams competed at Darlington on Thursday.

The Darlington boys finished first with a team score of 168 points, with Cedartown coming in second and Coosa finishing fifth. The Cedartown girls finished second to Mt. Paran with 152.5 points, while Coosa finished fourth and Darlington finished fifth.

The Cedartown girls had five first-place finishes, starting with Jameia Diamond finishing first in the 100-meter (13.08) and 200-meter dash (27.59) and the shot put (16-11.25).

Shywuan Love won the 100-meter hurdles (17.21) and the 4x100 relay team also won (52.52).

The Cedartown boys had six athletes finish in first, with Tony Mathis winning the 110-meter (16.03) and the 300-meter hurdles (45.16). Joseph Gibbons won the 200-meter dash (23.25), Keshan Kent won the triple jump (41-07.5), Tyler Blalock won the shot put (51-09) and the 4x100 meter relay team won (44.08).

Darlington had three firstplace finishes, beginning with John-Prosser Deaton winning the 800-meter run (2:09.59). In the field events, Ezra Barnette won the pole vault (8-06) and Elijah Ball won the discus throw (121-05).

Coosa had one first-place finisher, with Carah Arrant winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.39.

SOCCER: Coosa boys 2, Gordon Central 0

The Coosa boys’ soccer team emerged victorious with a 2-0 win Thursday on the road against Region 7-AA opponent Gordon Central.

The Eagles scored both goals in the opening half, with Jorge Lopez setting up a goal for Jose Reyes in the 32nd minute and Orlando Lopez scoring on a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Goalkeeper Gavin Hughes pitched the shutout with eight saves.

Coosa (5-1, 3-0 7-AA) plays again today when it travels to Armuchee.

Pepperell boys 4, Model 2

Following a 2-2 tie at halftime in Thursday’s match, the Pepperell boys’ soccer team added two more goals in the second half to come away with a 4-2 win in Region 7-AA play at Model.

Tee Jarrard opened scoring for Model in the first minute giving the Blue Devils (6-3, 4-2 7-AA) an early 1-0 lead.

Pepperell’s Slamon Ghani and Ramiro Alanis scored goals to take a 2-1 lead before Jarrard scored again for Model to tie the score 2-2.

Ivan Sandoval scored two goals for Pepperell in the second half to seal the win. Jimmy Rivera and Alanis had assists.

Pepperell’s (5-2-1 5-0) goalkeeper Rigo Mandujano had five saves. Model’s goalkeeper Leonel Bello had 13 saves.

Pepperell will travel to play Rockmart on Saturday.

Model girls 10, Pepperell 0

The Model girls’ soccer team rolled to a Region 7-AA win Thursday with a 10-0 shutout against Pepperell.

Kyla Reynolds led the Model (7-2, 6-1 7-AA) scoring with four goals; Jennifer Espinoza and Libby Upton scored two goals each; Nora Grace Snow had one goal; Shay McGill had one goal and one assist; Anna Ruth Parker had one assist; and Leilani Rojas had two assists.

Melanie Morrison had four saves in goal for the Lady Blue Devils.

Pepperell (4-3, 3-3) goalkeeper Lakeeya Wiggins had four saves. Pepperell was missing two starters and another player because of an injury.

Model will next face Coosa on the road Tuesday. Pepperell will face Gordon Central on the road Monday.

TENNIS: Model sweeps Chattooga

The Model boys’ and girls’ tennis teams came away with wins Thursday as both teams shut out Chattooga, 5-0.

For the girls, Ashlyn Godfrey won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; Meredith Leonard won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1; and Evalyn Edwards won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Reagan Dooley and Natalie Davis won 6-1, 6-1; and at No. 2 doubles, Macy Early and Emily Hicks won 6-1, 6-3.

For the boys, at No. 1 singles, Parker Stone won 6-0, 6-0; Chase Geier won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles; and Micah Veillon won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Stephen Boylan and David Mountain won 6-0, 6-0; and at No. 2 doubles, Sam Bryant and Barton Sopotic won 6-2, 6-0.

Rockmart teams top Trion

The boys’ and girls’ Rockmart teams both earned 3-2 win against Trion on Thursday.

All of the Jackets’ and Lady Jackets’ wins came in singles.

For the girls (6-1), Emma Evans won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0; at No. 2 singles, Mary Ella Owen won 6-3, 6-1; and Taylor McVey won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

For the boys (6-1), Timothy Malone won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles; Koby Adams won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles; and Austin Shelton won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Rockmart will host Model on Monday.

Coosa shuts down Dade County

The Coosa girls’ tennis team blanked Dade County 5-0 on the road Thursday, while the boys’ team earned a 3-2 win.

For the girls (6-1), at No. 1 singles, Tori Overby won 6-1, 6-0; at No. 2 singles, Cheyenne Lambert won 6-4, 6-1; and at No. 3 singles, Victoria Thomaston won 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Keegan Justice and Rajohnae Hames won 6-3, 6-3, and at No. 2 doubles, Sadie Hagen and Alexis Holmes won 6-0, 6-0.

For the boys (5-2), Sam Corbin won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Joseph Smyth won at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Jordan Broome and Jaden Cave won 6-2, 6-2.

Coosa will next face Gordon Central on Monday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Armuchee sweeps Gordon Central

The Armuchee tennis teams shut down Gordon Central on Thursday at the Rome Tennis Center. The girls won 3-2, and the boys won 4-1.

For the girls (3-3), Brooke Dellis won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0; Belle Tanner won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1; and Madison Bartlett won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

For the boys (3-3), at No. 1 singles, Riley Purdy won 6-2, 5-7, 6-4; at No. 2 singles, Luke Purdy won 6-3, 6-4; and at No. 3 singles, Levi Johnson won 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Trent Weaver and Ethan Hooper won 6-3, 6-3.

Armuchee will next face Pepperell on Monday at the Rome Tennis Center.

GOLF: Darlington splits

The Darlington boys’ golf team earned a win Thursday against Calhoun and Rome, however the girls’ team was defeated by Calhoun.

The Tigers shot a 153, while Calhoun shot a 176 and Rome finished with a 181.

Darlington’s Peter Hinnant and Lindsey Cordell were the Tigers’ low scorers with 37s. Carter Anderson shot a 38, and Alec Patterson carded a 41. For Rome, Justin Kim carded a 39, Sam Branton recorded a 43, John Goolsby had a 47, and William Douglas had a 52.

For the girls, Darlington’s Tammy Yan shot a 45, and Sophia Kalusche carded a 47.

LACROSSE: E. Paulding girls 10, Darlington 6

Lizzie LaVangie scored four goals and had one assist for the Darlington girls’ lacrosse team, however the Lady Tigers dropped a 10-6 loss to East Paulding on the road.

Tate Morgan and Annabelle Braden each scored one goal for the Lady Tigers (1-5, 0-4).

Darlington will next visit North Cobb on Tuesday.
