Pet pig ruling set for Tuesday
County commissioners also are expected to approve a contract to remodel a warehouse on Lavender Drive as the new recycling center.
Jerry and Joyce Holland are expected to find out Tuesday if they can continue to keep 10 pigs as pets on their 0.72-acre property at 5109 Alabama Highway.
The Coosa couple also has two donkeys and a miniature horse in the menagerie they have rescued over the course of five years. They’re seeking a zoning change, from suburban-residential to agricultural-residential, and a special-use permit for the pigs.
The Floyd County Commission is slated to make a decision on the request following a public hearing at its 6 p.m. meeting.
A hearing and ruling also is scheduled on St. Andrew’s Anglican Church’s request for office-institutional zoning on two residential lots adjoining the church at 42 Ash St.
The board also is scheduled to recognize employees with at least 15 years of service, including Utilities Administrator Steve Hulsey, who has been with the county for 35 years.
And County Manager Jamie McCord is expected to present several proposed contracts and purchase orders connected with playground upgrades, renovations at the Forum River Center and a remodel of a warehouse on Lavender Drive as the new recycling center.
Commissioners will set their formal agenda during their 4 p.m. pre-meeting caucus. Both sessions — on the second floor of the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. — are open to the public.
The board also has a special planning session set for Wednesday in the courtroom of the Historic Floyd County Courthouse off West Fifth Avenue.
Commissioners will convene from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. to review finances, construction projects and administrative issues. A dinner with the Rome City Commission is scheduled for 6 p.m.
