Musical set to open April 7
County schools’ second system-wide musical is a fun-filled comedy set to Gershwin tunes.
The story of a city boy, a country girl and a theater will come to life April 7, 8 and 9 as Floyd County Schools’ countywide musical production brings a little Gershwin to Northwest Georgia.
The cast and crew — made up of students from all four county high schools — have been working hard since October to bring the classic musical comedy to life.
“We had work sessions right after casting in October,” explained Katerina Creel, a Model student who portrays Tess, the dance captain of Zangler’s Follies. “I learned
how to tap dance, and I did not know how to dance before.”
The show is filled with the lyrics and music of Ira and George Gershwin and considered one of the classic Gershwin musical comedies. It tells the story of a young banker who loves the Zangler
Follies and constantly auditions. One day, he is sent on a bank assignment to Deadrock, Nevada, to take the deed of a theater in the town. He falls for the daughter of the owner, and sets about trying to save the old theater. Hijinks ensue with mistaken identities, disguises,
musically talented cowboys and Follies showgirls all falling into the mix of romance, laughter and music.
This is the second countywide production for Floyd County Schools.
Lacey Pinson, Model High’s theater and dance instructor, and Judson Whitfield, choral director at Pepperell High, and Sherry Childs, coordinator of the program at the central office, are all looking forward to the show.
The system put on “The Phantom of the Opera” last year. This year’s show promises to be lighter and more fun.
“This show is filled with fabulous production numbers,” Childs said. “We wanted to experiment with other types of musicals and have the students learn about different styles of music.”
Bringing the four high schools together has been a great way for county students to bond, she added.
“When they come together, you would never know that they aren’t all from the same school,” Childs said.
Creel agreed.
“We are like one big family,” she said. “Theater is like our home away from home. I remember when I arrived at Model in 10th grade I auditioned for a show there. That is how I made my friends because I met them through the theater program. It’s just a sense of community.”
The show begins April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Model High School’s auditorium, 3252 Calhoun Road. The show continues April 8 at 7:30 p.m. and also on April 9 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door, and are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
