Plant sales are blooming all over Rome

Four sales spread out across April will offer something for everyone with a love of playing in the dirt.

Monday will kick off the plant sale extravagan­za that is April in Floyd County.

Four different plant sales are planned, spreading across three weeks, each with unique offerings and locally-grown plants.

The first will be at Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy from Monday through April 7. The sale will be at the school’s greenhouse at 100 Tom Poe Drive. Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6 and April 7.

The sale will include Boston and Kimberly Queen ferns as well as four different types of petunias, begonias and geraniums.

Vegetable plants will be available as well. The students will have several different types of tomatoes, Big Boys, Better Boys, Whoppers, cherry tomatoes, Romas and Beefmaster­s. Pepper varieties include sweet and hot banana peppers, jalapenos and four colors of bell peppers.

The vegetables and bedding plants are $10 per flat, mixing and matching is allowed. Hanging baskets are $10 each.

Buyers may use cash or check to purchase plants. Anyone with questions may call the academy at 706-236-1860.

The Chieftains Herb and Plant Sale will be April 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 9 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Coosa Valley Fairground­s, rain or shine.

The sale will feature more than 30 varieties of herbs, along with organic vegetables, native and

unique heirloom plants. Annuals and perennials also will be available. An addition to the traditiona­l sale this year is a pre-order sale for large es and shrubs with limd availabili­ty. Visit the seum’s website to see list of plants, then call to order ahead of the sale. Credit cards will be acted, in addition to checks and cash. All proceeds benefit the museum.

Berry College’s plant sale will be at the college greenhouse behind the Ford Complex next to the baseball fields. The sale will take place April 10-13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Items include a variety of culinary garden herbs and garden ornamental­s.

Georgia Northweste­rn Technical College’s plant sale will be April 18-21. The sale will be from 1 to 6 p.m. on April 18 and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 1920. On the last day, April 21, the sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will take place at the horticultu­re greenhouse on Woodlee Hill across from GNTC’s Floyd County campus.

Items being sold include a large selection of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, blooming plants, and potted geraniums. The vegetables will include tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, eggplants, and more.

“We will have various varieties of all the plants,” said David Warren, director of horticultu­re. “There are probably five or six different varieties of petunias, three or four different kinds of marigolds, and four or five kinds of tomatoes.”

Purchases may be made with cash or check.
