Unity sisters meet for GICAA tennis title

Unity Christian tennis players Dory Williams and Mackey Williams found themselves facing each other for a division title on Tuesday as the two worked their way through the GICAA Individual State Tennis Tournament in Jonesboro.

After defeating players from Faith Christian Academy, Peachtree Academy and David Emmanuel Academy in the singles tournament, Dory Williams, the No. 1 seed, and Mackey Williams, the No. 2 seed, played in the title match.

Dory Williams ended up winning to earn the GICAA Division II-A singles title. She has gone undefeated this season as an eighthgrad­er.

“Dory is one of the most consistent players I’ve ever seen and extremely poised,” Unity Christian coach Emily Claytor said. “She puts in a lot of time to advance her game and I’m glad she was rewarded today with a very deserving state championsh­ip.”

Unity Christian’s team will compete in the GICAA State Team Tournament in Jonesboro on Tuesday to defend their title.

Darlington boys to play for area title

Darlington’s boys’ tennis team will play Mount Paran for the Area 4-A Private championsh­ip today in Kennesaw after going 2-0 in the tournament on Tuesday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

The Tigers defeated St. Francis and Mount Pisgah to reach the tournament finals. In both cases, Darlington won the first three matches to finish. The coaches agreed to pull the remaining matches, leading to back-to-back 3-0 wins.

Darlington’s girls lost a tough match against a strong St. Francis team in Tuesday’s first round, falling 3-1 before the final match was halted.

SOCCER: Rome girls 4, East Paulding 1

The Rome girls’ soccer team capped its regular season with 4-1 victory against East Paulding in Region 7-5A play in Dallas on Tuesday. Rebekah Hufstetler scored two goals and had an assist, but the senior also tied the school’s single-season scoring record with 41 goals.

Alli Gaither added the other two goals for Rome, while Shea Kelly and Heidi Cole had an assist each. Kat Tracy did her part in goal with 11 saves.

The Lady Wolves (9-8, 6-2 7-5A) clinch the No. 2 seed in the region with the win and host a playoff game April 27.

Model girls 3, Coosa 2, OT

The Model and Coosa girls’ soccer teams finished their storm-halted match from March 21 on Tuesday as the Lady Devils snuck out a 3-2 overtime win in the Region 7-AA contest.

Tied 2-2, Leilani Rojas made the Lady Devils’ goal in overtime for the go-ahead score. Jennifer Espinoza and Kyla Reynolds scored for Model (14-3, 13-1 7-AA), while keeper Melanie Morrison had eight saves.

Coosa’s Evelyn Cruz had a goal and an assist, while Emily Martin’s goal tied the game with 17 minutes left in regulation and keeper Alexys Davis recorded seven saves.

Coosa (8-7, 4-7) finishes its season Thursday at Pepperell, while Model goes into the state playoffs as the 7-AA champions.

King’s Academy girls 3, Unity 1

The Unity Christian girls’ soccer team suffered only its second

loss of the season Tuesday as it fell to visiting King’s Academy 3-1.

Hannah Eddins scored the lone goal for the Lady Lions, while Chanceley Book notched 12 saves in goal. Unity was able to keep the score locked 1-1 at halftime but allowed two late goals.

Unity Christian (8-2) finishes the regular season with a game against Lanier Academy on Thursday at Grizzard Park.

LACROSSE: Darlington girls 18, Mount Paran 5

The Darlington girls’ lacrosse team won its final home game of the season Tuesday, taking down Mount Paran 18-5.

Kathryne Ledbetter led with four goals, while Tate Morgan had three goals and two assists.

Lizzie LaVangie had three goals and one assist. Samanda Cox had two goals and two assists, and Hayden Baldwin recorded nine saves.

The Lady Tigers (5-10) play again tonight when they travel to Cumming to play Forsyth Central for the final game of the season.

GOLF: Model leads Day 1 of Floyd Invitation­al

Model finished the first day of the boys’ Floyd County Invitation­al with a leading score of 153, while Pepperell has 183 and Coosa and Armuchee each have 224.

Cooper Greer led the Blue Devils with a 34 over nine holes. Cody Ballard led the Dragons with a score of 44, while Coosa’s Dawson Tate had a 39.

Armuchee was paced by Dre-quan Cook with a 47.

The teams continue play today at Stonebridg­e starting at 4 p.m.
