Dr. Stanley Jackson Self

Dr. Stanley Jackson Self, age 76, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2017, at home.

He was born in Macon, Georgia on July 18, 1940, son of George and Bessie Self of Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, Georgia, Mercer University, and the Medical College where he received his M.D. He interned at the Macon Hospital and began his residency in Dermatolog­y at the University of Alabama where he was the Chief Resident and became a Board Certified Dermatolog­ist.

Immediatel­y following, he went in the US Army as a Major and served as Chief of Dermatolog­y at Martin Army Hospital. He and his family moved to Rome, Georgia in 1972 where he began his practice of 30 years.

Dr. Self was a long time member of First Baptist Church where he was a lifetime Deacon. He was an active member of Rome Rotary Club and a member of Nine O’Clock Cotillion. He loved playing golf. After his retirement, he suffered a massive stroke in December, 2003 and was confined to a wheelchair. He was an inspiratio­n to all with his kind spirit and loving manner.

Dr. Self was preceded in death by his parents and a son, William (Bill) Jackson Self. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Layton Self, to whom he was married May 31, 1964; two sons, Gregory Thomas Self (Christene), Sandy Springs, Georgia and Neal Jackson Self, Rome, Georgia; and grandchild­ren, Layton William Self, Cameron Thomas Self, Lauren Elizabeth Self, and Conner Jackson Self. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Fellows, nieces and cousins.

During the last thirteen years, he had many devoted caregivers including Marian Hoskins, Maher Khatib, and Bill Gilliland who helped him for the entire time. Others who were there for several years were Manuel Echavarria, Tom Pulliam, Clyde Newsom, Michelle Graham, E.J. Watson, and Paul Jones.

In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1189, Rome, Georgia 30162-1189 or the William S. Davies Homeless Shelter, 3 Central Plaza #198, Rome, Georgia 30161.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with pastors Matt Duvall and Dr. Joel Snider presiding. The family will receive friends immediatel­y following in the sanctuary. Della M. Woodard

Mrs. Della M. Woodard, age 88, of Rome, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at her residence.

Bruce Morgan Odom

Mr. Bruce Morgan Odom, age 64, of Silver Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening, April 24, 2017.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lindale with the Rev. Tim Burnham officiatin­g and with family and friends sharing. In accordance with his wishes, following the service he will be cremated with inurnment later in Georgia National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

Mr. Lewis E. Lowe, age 95, of Rome, Georgia, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his residence.

He was born in Cedartown, Georgia on January 10, 1922, a son of Andy Lowe and Minnie Locklear Lowe. Mr. Lowe had been a resident of Rome the greater part of his life and was a partner in the Lowes Supermarke­t of Rome for nearly 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1942 until 1946. Mr. Lowe was a pilot who enjoyed flying his Apache airplane for many years. He was also a Major with the Civil Air Patrol in Floyd County. Mr. Lowe was a member of the Rome Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dale Medlin Lowe on September 16, 2014, and by his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a step son, Larry McCullough, Cleveland, Tennessee; granddaugh­ter, Dana (Tom) Sewell, New York, New York; nieces: Lynda Black, Dalton, Catherine (Gordon) Whittingto­n, Marietta and Pat (Dick) Johnston, Bald Island, North Carolina; nephews: Robert (Nancy) Rea, Oak Island, North Carolina and Mike (Sheryl) Jenkins, Rome.

Graveside funeral and interment services will be held Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens, Rome with his granddaugh­ter, Dana Sewell, delivering a eulogy and Minister Steve Rogers officiatin­g. Military honors will be provided by the Honor Guard of Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n, 41 Perimeter Center, Suite 550 Atlanta, Georgia 30346 in Mr. Lowe’s memory.
