Calhoun discusses $457K budget deficit

CALHOUN — The City of Calhoun announced Monday night during a budget work session a $457,000 shortfall they are trying to overcome in the city’s general fund for the upcoming 2018 fiscal year budget, which will begin July 1, 2017, and run through June 30, 2018.

“There will be no requests for rate increases in any water or sewer this year,” said City Administrator Eddie Peterson, who gave the overview of the utilities budget and general fund budget, saying the utility budget for the city is balanced.

The problem lies in the general fund, where the $457,000 is attributed to a variety of different things, including a 10 percent increase in the city’s insurance benefits offered to employees.

The $456,000 does not include the $150,000 the Airport Authority is asking for the city to provide for engineering and consulting costs of corporate hangers they would like to build, nor does it include a 2-percent raise for city employees, which comes in at an additional $260,000.

Total shortfall including those expenses would be more than $865,000.
