Beginning Monday, Floyd Countians and residents of 53 other counties will not be allowed to burn leaves and other organic debris. The open burning ban has been in place during the summer ozone season since 2005. The outside burn ban will end Sept. 30. Burning household garbage is never allowed anywhere in Georgia. Ground-level ozone is most commonly produced in the heat of the summer and can cause lung inflammati­on as well as other health problems.

Women will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Red Lobster, 700 Shorter Ave, with the meeting to begin at noon. Carolyn Hall Fischer, candidate for Georgia GOP first vice-chairman, will be the guest speaker.

The Rotary Club of Rome will host video tours of America with John English on Thursday. The club meets Thursdays at noon at Coosa Country Club, 110 Branham Ave.

The New Horizons Band will have an organizati­onal meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Franklin Hall at Shorter University. The group

is made of members 50 years old or older who either played a band instrument in school and haven’t played in many years or would like to learn to play an instrument and play in a group setting. Gardeners will offer a free community “Gardening in Containers” workshop May 6 at 11 a.m. at Chieftains Museum on Riverside Parkway. New Life Church of God, 210 E. 18th St., will host Third Street Ministries on May 6 as they give away free spring clothing to those in need between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A prayer station will be set up for anyone who needs prayer.

The AIDS Resource Council’s fourth annual Derby Bash

fundraiser will be held May 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 507 E. Third St. The bash will serve traditiona­l Kentucky Derby fare and libations, and participan­ts will watch the Kentucky Derby. There will be a best hat contest, with the winner receiving a $50 gift certificat­e from a Rome restaurant. A silent auction will include items donated by local merchants. Habitat for Humanity-Coosa Valley will be holding a family selection meeting at the Rome-Floyd County Library, 205 Riverside Parkway, on May 6 at 10:30 a.m. and May 8 at 6 p.m. Applicants must have lived or worked in Floyd County for at least a year and have an income less than $51,350 to apply.

The third annual A Night to Remember: An Adult Prom benefiting the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n will take place May 13 at 8 p.m. at the Forrest Place Ballroom on Broad Street.
