The third day of the ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships brought out a diverse crowd as the top-seeded teams took to the courts in the tournament quarterfinals.

And while many were there to see the competition from some of the top-ranked teams in the country, others also got a chance to see the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College for the first time.

Cabell Sweeny of Rome and some of her friends were a few of those who were attending an event at the new facility for the first time and were taking in the tournament as part of a “girls’ day out.”

“It is incredible that this is in our town, and we cannot believe that we haven’t come out here before this,” Sweeny said.

“We were looking for something different to do today, and we have enjoyed watching these players and are blown away by the high level of talent,” said Emmy Gilbert, one of Sweeny’s friends.

Bryan Shephard was with a group from Atlanta who came to Friday’s matches ready to see

some of their favorite schools, like Georgia Tech and Duke.

“It’s just an amazing facility, and overall I’m excited to see some high-level competition,” Shephard said.

Friday’s matches consisted of the top-seeded Wake Forest men’s team picking up a win over N.C. State to advance to today’s semifinals against Georgia Tech at 10 a.m. Wake Forest’s Alan Gadjiev said having a few days to practice on the courts helped them in their first match of the tournament.

“We got used to the conditions by getting here early on Tuesday and felt well prepared, but we are happy to have the first day in the books and to get ready for tomorrow,” Gadjiev said.

“The competition is stiff, but the facility overall has lots of courts, which makes playing the matches easier,” said Alex Keator, communications manager for Georgia Tech tennis.
