ACC tennis championships recap
The quarterfinals of the 2017 ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships saw few surprises on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College as the top four seeds in both tournaments earned spots in today’s semifinal round.
In the men’s competition, top-seeded Wake Forest blanked N.C. State 4-0, with Wake Forest’s Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri, the top-ranked duo in the nation, getting the match rolling with a 6-1 victory over Michael Ogden and Alexis Galarneau.
Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky clinched the doubles point for the Deamon Deacs with a 6-3 win over the Wolfpack’s Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic.
No. 4 seed Georgia Tech got a decided point at No. 2 singles where Andrew Li of Tech gutted out a 7-5, 6-4, victory over Duke’s Catalin Mateas to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 victory.
No. 2 Virginia dominated Louisville 4-0, while North Carolina got a 4-1 win over Florida State.
In the women’s tournament, No. 1 seed North Carolina completed a 4-1 win over Florida State after Jessie Aney dropped the first set against Julia Mikulski in singles play but came back 6-1, 6-2, to send the Tar Heels to the semis.
No. 3-seeded Georgia Tech got a 4-0 win over Wake Forest to advance. The Yellow Jackets got out to a quick start claiming the doubles point. Nami Otsuka clinched the win on court five with a 6-4, 6-0, straight set win over Chandler Carter.
Duke, the No. 2 seed, defeated Clemson 4-1, while No. 4 seed Miami stormed past Boston College, 4-0.
