Shorter softball earns spot in conference tournament with sweep

Shorter University’s softball team extended its season Friday with a sweep of a doublehead­er against Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers in Memphis. The Lady Hawks won the opener 5-1 before taking the finale 3-1.

Shorter tied up Game 1 1-1 in the fourth on Savannah Thomas’ second homerun of the year before breaking through for four runs in the fifth. Kameron Carter went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Carson Carriker and Thomas each had two hits. Payton Lippert went the distance, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts for the complete game win.

Shorter (27-22, 16-15 GSC) never trailed in Game 2, taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Tiffany Holland scored on a sacrifice fly from Carter and leading the rest of the way. Hannah Draper earned the win. The Lady Hawks close out the regular season today with a 1 p.m. game to wrap up the series against Christian Brothers. in Game 2 to lose 5-4.

Shorter led for most of the finale after taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Isaiah Maddela and a 2-run single from Raul Cortes.

The sixth inning proved to be the difference as Christian Brother rallied for four runs.

Shorter will look to end the season on a high note today in the finale for both teams. Game time from Memphis is set for 1 p.m.
