Cremains turned over to coroner

Rome police turned over a box of cremated remains to Floyd County

Coroner Barry Henderson after the purported owner refused to claim them.

According to police reports:

Henderson sent officers to Safe Storage, 45 Rogers Drive, Tuesday after an employee there contacted him about the abandoned cremains.

The contents of a storage unit were sold April 4 due to nonpayment of rent, but the buyer would not take a white box from a Buchanan crematory. A label on the box identified the remains as those of a man who had died in 2012.

The employee contacted the woman who had rented the storage unit but she failed to show up to claim the box. She hung up on the last call so he called the coroner.

Police delivered the cremains to Henderson at his request.
