The 8th Annual Roman Roast on the River is coming back to Ridge Ferry Park starting on Friday and concluding on Saturday. The two-day barbecue competition promises free smoky delight to all who attend, and will include live music entertainment.

For those looking to not just view and smell the assorted meats, a $10 ticket on Friday will provide the opportunity to taste wings entered in the King of the Wings competition, sponsored by Springer Mountain Farms. Saturday will bring the official judging of entries in the categories of chicken, pork, beef brisket and ribs. Grill masters across two divisions, “Professional” and “Backyard,” will vie for the title of best of the best.

In addition to the officially judged portion of the weekend’s festivities, 11:30 a.m. on Saturday will mark the beginning of the People’s Choice contest, sponsored by Sonny’s BBQ. Twenty-five backyard and professional teams will compete in a blind taste test and work their magic on donated pork butts from Sonny’s. By purchasing a $10 ticket, event attendees will be the de-facto judges, and decide the winner to be crowned “People’s Choice Favorite.”

Besides hungry adults, kids will also find plenty to do. For $5, an armband grants access to various inflatables and fun activities. Young chefs also won’t feel left out of the action—the Kids Q contest on Friday consists of the small culinary conquerors being given a mini Weber grill and one pound of ground beef. All other spices and sauces they bring from home. Then, tools in hand, they will be tasked with turning their portion into something delicious — under parental supervision of course. The total purse for all contest prizes this year totals $10,700. For more information, visit www. romanroastontheriver.com online.
