Fatal GSP shooting still under review

CEDARTOWN — Jack Browning, district attorney for the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit, said Wednesday the results of a GBI investigat­ion into a fatal law enforcemen­t related shooting is still under review by his office.

The GBI said the report was turned over to Browning’s office on April 21.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper shot and killed an Aragon man who fled from a DUI patrol on March 18 in Polk County, according to a news release from the GBI and Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier.

Jason Dennis Watkins, 36, was fatally shot by Trooper Johnathan Mason as Watkins sped off, the GBI reported.

Strawberry festival set for Saturday

CALHOUN — Payne Farm and Produce will hold the sixth annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Activities that day will include strawberry picking, petting barn, hayrides, inflatable­s, a corn crib and a playground.

There will also be arts and crafts vendors in attendance that can assist in providing the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

A wide variety of food available from various vendors will include barbecue, fried strawberri­es, strawberry ice cream, fried pickles, kettle corn and more.

Admission for the event is $7 at the gate, and includes all activities except strawberry picking and any merchandis­e purchased from vendors.

In honor of Mother’s Day, mothers will get in free.

Children ages 2 and under can also attend for free.
