Trojans swept in Class A Public championship series
Gordon Lee is the last Northwest Georgia team left in the playoffs.
The Schley County Wildcats won their second Class A Public School state baseball championship in three seasons Thursday as they swept Gordon Lee at State Mutual Stadium.
It was the end of a long and bumpy season for the Trojans from Chickamauga, who were the lone Northwest Georgia team remaining in the playoffs.
“I’m still super proud of the kids,” head coach Mike Dunfee said. “With all the adversity that went on this year, just making it here (to Rome) was freaking outstanding. I know how bad they wanted this, but they still showed a lot of grit and toughness throughout the year.”
Schley County (35-2) won the opener of the title series 6-0 and took Game 2 by a final of 12-3, ending Gordon Lee’s season at 27-9.
Gordon Lee had plenty of opportunities throughout the doubleheader. The Trojans left 15 runners on base in the two games, 10 in scoring position.
The Wildcats scored twice in the top of the third inning of Game 1. Schley County would then break it open with a fourrun fifth. They took advantage of two Gordon Lee errors in the frame, while starting pitcher Will Barry helped himself with a tworun double. Gordon Lee would get just one more batter into scoring position in the final three innings. Caleb Hopkins laced a two-out double in the sixth, but was once against left stranded.
Barry worked six innings to get the win, allowing just five hits. Austin Thompson threw five innings for Gordon Lee, allowing six hits as he was saddled with the loss.
