Drew Cummings, a standout on the Armuchee basketball team, received a top honor for representing Northwest Georgia in an allstar showcase this week.

The recent Armuchee graduate scored 19 points and had seven rebounds in the Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Boys’ Basketball Classic at Chattanooga’s Notre Dame High School on Tuesday night, earning him Georgia Player of the Game status.

Cummings scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, but Tennessee led wire-to-wire to take a 95-67 win in the traditional battle to take a 10-4 lead in the all-time series. Chapin Rierson (Calhoun) not only won the 3-point shootout, but also set a new All-Star game mark with 12 rebounds to go with his 11 points.

Gavin Steele (Coahulla Creek) had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Malik Lawrence (Calhoun) scored nine points and had four rebounds, while Seth Stanley (Armuchee) scored eight points.

In the girls’ game, Team Tennessee used a big opening quarter to win their seventh in a row in the all-time series, 70-53. The two teams matched each other with 45 points over the final three quarters, but it was a 25-8 run in the first eight minutes that made the difference for Tennessee.

Georgia Player of the Game honors went to Jana Johns (Calhoun), whose 10 points made her the only Georgia player in double figures. She also grabbed five rebounds.
