Warrants issued in murder case
Police say the death of Randy Lamont Driver is not connected to shootings on Grover Street last week.
Police were searching Sunday night for 49-year-old Frederick Duane Driver in connection with the fatal shooting of a 44-year-old Rome man on East Main Street.
Floyd County Coroner Barry Henderson said Randy Lamont Diamond was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m. Saturday in the Floyd Medical Center emergency room.
According to Rome Police Capt. Roy Willingham:
Diamond was shot in the doorway of a duplex at 103 E. Main St. just before 11 p.m. It was a continuation of a verbal argument earlier in the day.
“Mr. Driver left, then came back and started it again,” Willingham said. “It escalated to him shooting Mr. Diamond.”
It was unclear Sunday what the two were arguing about. Murder warrants were taken out against Driver when Diamond died.
“As far as we’re concerned, we’ve got the right person,” Willingham said. “Witnesses identified him by name and by picture.”
Willingham also said the homicide was not gang-related, and not connected with another fatal shooting last week on Grover Street.
“No, not at all,” he emphasized.
James Edward Parks was shot to death at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Nixon Avenue at Grover Street and another male was taken to the hospital with at least one gunshot wound. Willingham said the second victim, whose name is being withheld, was still being treated at FMC Sunday.
The man was able to talk with investigators and confirm that the white vehicle that dropped him on Broad Street — where police found him — had been trying to get him to the hospital.
